The protagonist, Hiraga Ryuuichi, graduates from university and joins a mid-range electronics manufacturer as a first-year salesman. While being worked hard by his boss as a new member of the sales department, he spends fulfilling days. His girlfriend, Kisaragi Ami, whom he had been dating since college, has decided to join a major restaurant company and the two of them enjoy a brief rest before the start of her training. As time passes, they become unable to see each other as they cannot find time due to their work. However, they frequently exchange emails and phone calls, and their relationship grows stronger through occasional dates. During their dates, Ryuuichi begins to feel a sense of discomfort that he cannot put into words. He notices that Ami praises her company and boss more often and frequently cuts their dates short due to calls from her boss. Despite this, Ryuuichi is impressed by Ami's seriousness in learning her job and her efforts to save money for their future. One day, Ryuuichi happens to see a viral video on the internet about an employee training program that has been criticized for being too extreme. In this video he sees Ami tearfully reciting the company's motto, which makes him feel uneasy.
